THE LIFTS
Event 1: Max wagon wheel deadlift
- Scoring: highest weight lifted for 1 rep wins
- Rules:
- Technique: athlete must begin with feet between where hands are placed on the bar (no sumo stance). Bar can move in any direction between the ground and lockout (downward movement/hitching is permitted). Rep is complete during full hip and knee lockout--athlete must wait for the judges’ “down” signal to show they have control of the bar. Dropping the bar (full release from hands while standing upright) will result in a failed attempt, even if judge has given the ‘down’ signal.
- Equipment. Lifting straps, belt, knee sleeves, singlet, knee socks, chalk, and baby powder are permitted, but not required. Shoes are required. Multi-ply deadlift suits, tacky and lifting gloves are not permitted. Lifters must be mindful of applying baby powder away from the lifting area to avoid creating slippery walking surfaces.
- Logistics: Spotters will start by loading the starting weight for each weight class. Lifters must each attempt the lift. After all attempts are complete, weight will increase in increments: 50lbs for men, 30lbs for women. Repeat the process. Once a lifter is unable to complete the rep, the last successful attempt will be marked as their final score. Process continues until all lifters fail or decide to abstain from remaining attempts. Spotters must wipe down the bar of chalk, baby powder, blood, etc. between every rep.
- Scoring: A lifter’s final score is recorded as their heaviest full rep completed. Highest weight within each weight class scores first place in this event.
Event 2: Log Clean & Press Away
- Scoring: highest reps on presses within 60 seconds wins
- Rules
- Technique: Timer starts with log on 6” crash pads, lifter cannot touch the log until timer begins. A full press must end with the lifter’s elbows locked out, log above their head.Judges will give the “down” command when the rep is complete. Viper press (smooth motion from ground to press without resting log on chest) is permitted. Lifters are permitted to bend knees and use legs to push press or jerk the weight. Once weight is pressed, lifter can hold the bar at their chest between presses, or rest bar on ground and clean again between presses. Lifters must place bar on crash pads when returning it to the ground. Dropping from overhead (bar above shoulders) will result in a failed rep, even if the judge has given the ‘down’ signal.
- Equipment: Wrist wraps, knee sleeves, belt, singlet, elbow sleeves, heeled-lifting shoes and chalk are permitted for this event. Shoes are required. Multi-ply singlets, tacky and lifting gloves are not permitted. Female and teen lifters are required to use the 45lb log, adult male lifters are required to use the 70lb log
- Logistics: Weight is loaded according to lifter’s weight class. Lifters have one attempt to press the log overhead as many times as possible in one minute (cleans are included in this time, but only presses are counted as reps). Lifters can continue until the minute is up, even if they fail a rep.
- Scoring: Highest number of presses per weight class wins.
Event 3: Yoke Carry
- Scoring: Farthest distance within 60 seconds wins
- Rules:
- Technique: Yoke bar should be set to lifter’s armpit height, and weight added according to their weight class. Timer starts with yoke on the ground. Lifter may have one hand on the yoke but cannot lift the cage until the timer begins. Lifters may run or walk with the yoke. They may set the cage on the ground and reset as many times as they want. When the lifter reaches the end of the track and needs to turn around, they may set the yoke down and turn around in the cage, or carry it in a circle while turning.
- Equipment: Chalk, belt, singlet, lifting shoes and knee sleeves are permitted but not required. Shoes are required. Lifting straps, gloves, baby powder, tacky, and multi-ply singlets are not permitted.
- Logistics: Distance will be determined by the location of the center bar of the yoke when the timer stops. Judges mark the start and ending location, after which distance will be measured.
- Scoring: scoring is calculated by distance (feet) covered in 1 minute. Longest distance wins.
Event 4: Sandbag Medley Over Bar
- Scoring: Fastest time to put all three sandbags over the bar wins
- Rules:
- Technique: Yoke bar will be set at each lifter’s bicep height. Lifters must pick up each sandbag and load it over the yoke bar in order of sandbag’s ascending weight. Lifter must load each sandbag before moving on to the next. Timer begins with the lifter standing in front of the lightest sandbag but not touching. Lifter’s have 1 min to get all three sandbags over the yoke bar as fast as possible.
- Equipment: Knee sleeves, heeled-lifting shoes, deadlift slippers, belt, singlet, elbow sleeves and chalk are permitted. Multi-ply singlets, lifting straps, wrist wraps, tacky and lifting gloves are not permitted.
- Logistics: The 3 sandbags will lay 2 ft apart in a line in order of ascending weight. Heaviest sandbag will lay 3ft from the yoke, in line with the corner of the rack.
- Scoring: Fastest to load all three sandbags wins. If not all sandbags are passed over the bar within 1 minute, score will reflect how many sandbags were loaded.
Event 5: Medley: Sled Rope Pull, Tire Flip, Farmer’s Carry
- Scoring: Fastest to complete the medley within the 2 minute time limit wins
- Rules:
- Technique:
- Sled Pull: a loaded prowler will be placed at the end of a 25 meter track. A rope will be attached and led to the lifter at the other end of the track. The lifter will be holding the rope, standing withing a 3ft zone. Pulling begins at start of timer. Lifters may pull hand-over-hand or pull with 2 hands, but their feet may not move outside the 3ft marked zone. If lifter steps outside the box, judge will call for them to return and a 3-second penalty will be added to their final time. Once the front of the sled is pulled passed the first marked line, the lifter can move on to the tire flip.
- Tire Flip: Tire leg starts with the tire laying flat within 1 ft of the starting line, 5ft away from the sled pull track. The lifter may use any technique they wish to flip the tire. Flips can begin immediately following completion of the sled pull. Lifters must flip the tire down to the end of the 25 meter track. Rolling the tire on its side is not permitted. Once the front of the tire passes the end of the track, the lifter can immediately proceed into the farmer’s carry leg of the medley.
- Farmer’s Carry: Farmers will be loaded according to each lifter’s weight class. Lifters may run or walk with the implements. They may set them on the ground and regrip as many times as they want. Throwing the implement (i.e. swinging arms and releasing so the weight moves forward) is not permitted. Total medley time is recorded once the lifter’s feet pass the finish line.
- Equipment: Knee sleeves, heeled-lifting shoes, belt, singlet, wrist wraps, elbow sleeves, and chalk are permitted. Multi-ply singlets, lifting gloves and tacky are not permitted.
- Logistics: Course is 3, 25 meter lanes, running in the same direction, each 5 ft apart from each other. Lane 1 contains the sled pull, land 2 the tire flip, and lane 3 the farmer’s carry. Athlete begins sled pull when timer starts, judge gives cue to move on to next event as soon as each stage is complete. Lifters have 2 minutes to complete all 3 events, final time is recorded upon completion. If the medley is not completed within 2 minutes, distance is measured from the start of the event the athlete was completing when time ran out.
- Scoring: Fastest to complete the medley within 2 minutes wins. If not completed within 2 minutes, athlete must stop and place implement down. In this case, record a) the event ended on, and b) distance from starting line.
